Sunrise – Sunset June 6, 2009
Today started early, really early! We arose at 1:30am. Our journey was a drive up the Haleakala Volcano, Hawaii’s only National Park, to the crater top at 10,000 feet. In just about 40 miles we went from sea level to the mountain top – wow. We went from a balmy 80+ degrees to about 40 degrees and windy. we dressed in warm layers and were pretty comfortable. At about 5:00am we were standing at the rim of the crater, staring at a faint orange glow, the next 40 minutes or so we watched the sun make her climb up out of the clouds and shine on our faces and warm our fingers and toes. It was an extraordinary view, looking out over the sea of clouds, and realizing the immensity of the crater below. This was a real once in a life time experience for us!
After a short nap we went to old town Lahaina for a bit of shopping and then we set sail for our sunset cocktail cruise. It was a nice evening aboard the Quest 2, a boat that is sponsored by Pacific Whale Foundation. We had good snacks, great drinks and an amazing sunset. What a way to end the day.
From Sunrise to Sunset we have had another fantastic day in paradise.
